Troubleshoot - ReplayTV - Locks Up
Troubleshoot - ReplayTV - Locks Up
Solution
If the ReplayTV Unit locks up or gets stuck in a loop it may require a reboot to function normally. If the Ethernet connection is used to connect to a network, the unit could be busy and appear unresponsive to remote control commands.
While lock ups can occur, especially with streaming from ReplayTV unit to ReplayTV unit, more than a couple per week should not be considered normal.
Units that have poor ventilation can cause over-heating which can result in any number of performance related issues.
ETHERNET USERS
If you use Ethernet, it is possible that the unit is performing a Network Connection in the background and the unit could be busy. Also you could see this behavior if you have more than one ReplayTV and are streaming to or from another ReplayTV unit or both. Wait about a minute before restarting the ReplayTV unit.
If this situation appears to be excessive, disconnect the unit from the network to see if the unit is responsive to commands.
SOFT BOOT THE REPLAYTV
Press and hold the POWER button on the front the of ReplayTV unit for about 15 seconds. The ReplayTV will reboot and may take up to two minutes to reboot.
The unit also may not be responsive to remote control commands during this time. It is normal for the ReplayTV unit to power OFF after it is completed. If the LED is off, then press the POWER button as the ReplayTV is ready.
HARD BOOT THE REPLAYTV
If the ReplayTV is recording, stop the recording and unplug the ReplayTV from AC power. Leave it disconnected for about 15 seconds; then reconnect to AC power.
IDENTIFYING A HEAT ISSUE
When a ReplayTV unit experiences problems with heat, it usually will exhibit distinct issues. Stuttering or skipping video, failure to connect for Channel Guide data and it will lockup or reboot.
If you have the ReplayTV unit installed in an entertainment center or rack, ensure that there is ample space above the ReplayTV unit, at least two inches. Additionally the ReplayTV unit should be on its own shelf with no units directly above or below it; especially a Cable or Satellite Box, as these devices generate a lot of heat.
Heat can cause issues with the hard drive, resulting in any number of problems.
- Hard boot the ReplayTV for at least 2 hours. This will allow the ReplayTV ample time to cool down.
- While the unit is cooling relocate the ReplayTV to a new environment where it will not be exposed to the heat problem, if it exists. For testing purposes this can be a temporary location, such as on top of the entertainment center.
- Once the ReplayTV unit has had time to cool off, reconnect the unit and try again. If the unit has ceased to have problems, identify a new location for the ReplayTV so that this issue does not occur again.
