Setup Or Configuration - Input - General Usage
Setup Or Configuration - Input - General Usage
Solution
Signal flow for all Audio and Video devices is directional and should be point to point. In other words; if you are connecting a Cable Box to the ReplayTV, the physical connection should be OUT of the Cable Box to IN on the ReplayTV. From there you will need to select that corresponding INPUT on the ReplayTV to receive input on that line.
The inputs on the ReplayTV must be configured through the software setup. If you do not configure the input then you will be able to see the ReplayTV Menus, but you will not be able to tune or view any signal on the line Input.
You can connect many types of components to the ReplayTV; some of them include a VCR or DVD Player, as well as another ReplayTV unit.
Remember the INPUT setup or configuration is two parts: one, the physical connection; and second, the software configuration. If the two do not match, then the ReplayTV will not be able to tune to a station or receive input from another device.
PHYSICAL CONNECTIONS
INPUT 1:
This input uses a composite cable FROM the source device's OUTPUT to the ReplayTV’s INPUT.
Match the color codes for easy identification and accurate connection. Red is for Right Channel Audio, White is for Left Channel Audio and Yellow is for Video.
INPUT 2:
This input uses a composite cable FROM the source device's OUTPUT to the ReplayTV’s INPUT; additionally it has an optional S-VIDEO connection for improved picture.
Connection for INPUT 2 is the same as INPUT 1 except for the addition of the S-Video Connection. If using S-VIDEO connection, then ensure that you do not use the yellow composite cabling (yellow connector), this will cause poor video performance.
ANT/CATV INPUT:
This input uses a coaxial cable coming FROM the destination device's OUTPUT tp the ReplayTV’s INPUT.
IR BLASTER:
If you are using a Cable or Satellite Box, you will need to use an IR Blaster to control channel changes.
Using your Cable or Satellite Box Remote, through process of elimination, identify the location of the IR Receptor on the Cable or Satellite Box. Use your hand to cover a portion of the front panel and turn the box on and off.
Then using a flashlight, shine the light into the front panel and locate the IR Receptor in the location. Once located, remove the adhesive tape from the IR Bug and place it sticky side down over the IR Receptor on the Cable Box.
Connect the headphone jack style connector firmly into the back of the ReplayTV unit. It will be labeled IR BLASTER and should seat firmly.
SERIAL CONNECTION:
Using the Serial Control for channel changing is the preferred method over the IR Blaster Cable. The problem is that the Serial Connection is only available to DirecTV customers with a Satellite Box or Receiver that will accept commands from the ReplayTV. Users of Dish Satellite Service cannot use the Serial Control, Dish users must use the IR Blaster for channel changing.
Some Satellite Boxes have a jack that resembles a telephone jack; it is labeled Low Speed Data Port. In most cases you can use the ReplayTV supplied adapter and control channel changing on the Satellite Box.
Not all Satellite Boxes are supported; some Satellite Boxes have a Serial Port or Low Speed Data Port, but it is not functional or only for diagnostic purposes.
Connect the serial cable to the back of the ReplayTV unit. It will be labeled SERIAL or SERIAL CONTROL and should secured with the thumbscrews.
Connect the other end into the DirecTV Satellite Receiver; if necessary use the serial adapter.
SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION
To access the Configuration or Setup menu follow the directions below.
- Press MENU
- Select SETUP
- Select NETWORK AND INPUT SETTINGS or DIALING AND INPUT SETTINGS
- Select the appropriate Input number, see details below:
CONFIGURING INPUT 1:
NO CONNECTION
If you did not physically connect a device to INPUT 1, then select NOTHING. No further configuration is necessary.
CABLE BOX
If you are using a Cable Box, then choose CABLE BOX from the list. 4xxx and 5xxx Users will need to select ANALOG or DIGITAL CABLE BOX. Please choose the appropriate model. If you are uncertain, please reference your Cable Box manual or contact your Cable Provider.
When referencing the IR Blaster test it is not necessarily an accurate test if the ReplayTV can toggle the Cable Box’s power on or off. This is because the ReplayTV must be able to change channels on the Cable Box and it MUST remain ON all the time. The true test is If it changes channels accurately.
- Select CABLE BOX, ANALOG CABLE BOX or DIGITAL CABLE BOX
- Select your Cable Provider from the list [You can preview the Channel Lineup before downloading it by selecting the RIGHT ARROW key on the ReplayTV Remote.
- Select your Cable Box Brand
- Select CONTINUE WHEN READY
- If you selected OTHER, then choose the make and model of the Cable Box, refer to the link below to identify an IR Blaster code as necessary.
- Select KEEP ALL SETTINGS
- Select DONE
- Test channel changing using the CHANNEL GUIDE, start by selecting single digit, then double digit and finally triple digit channels.
- If you experience issues with successful channel changes, then refer to the article TROUBLESHOOT - IR BLASTER - NO OR POOR RESPONSE TO IR COMMAND.

SATELLITE BOX
If you are using a Satellite Box, then choose SATELLITE BOX from the list. You will also need to choose the control type, whether or not it is an IR Blaster or, Serial or Serial APG Command Set using a Serial Cable. Serial APG is available for 5xxx users only with the latest software.
If you are not sure whether or not your Satellite Box supports Serial APG, please reference your Satellite Box manual or contact your Satellite Provider. Remember Serial Control is only available to DirecTV users only. Dish Network users must use the IR Blaster Cable.
When referencing the IR Blaster test it is not necessarily an accurate test if the ReplayTV can toggle the Satellite Box’s power on or off. This is because the ReplayTV must be able to change channels on the Satellite Box and it MUST remain ON all the time. The true test is If it changes channels accurately.
- Select SATELLITE BOX
- Select your Satellite Provider from the list [You can preview the Channel Lineup before downloading it by selecting the RIGHT ARROW key on the ReplayTV Remote.
- Select IR BLASTER, SERIAL PORT, or SERIAL PORT(APG)
- SERIAL Users, select KEEP ALL SETTINGS
- SERIAL Users, select DONE
- IR BLASTER Users, select your Satellite Box Brand
- IR BLASTER Users, select CONTINUE WHEN READY

CONFIGURING ANT/CATV:
The configuration of ANT/CATV is the same as INPUT 1 with two additional options which are ANTENNA and CABLE. If you are not using ANTENNA or CABLE; then refer to CONFIGURING INPUT 1 for more detailed regarding device configuration.
ANTENNA
If you are using an Over The Air Antenna, then choose ANTENNA from the list. No further configuration is necessary.
CABLE
If you are using Cable without a Cable Box, then choose CABLE from the list. You must then choose your Cable Provider.
- Select CABLE
