5xxx ReplayTV stuck on Transferring Additional Information or Checking For Software Update
Solution

This solution applies only to 5xxx units that are using software version 5.0.  Additionally, it only affects users that connect via modem.  Ethernet users are not affected.

The symptom is that the ReplayTV locks up after connecting to the ReplayTV service.  It must be rebooted to work again.  The message onscreen will normally be CHECKING FOR NEW SOFTWARE or TRANSFERRING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.   This issue has been resolved in version 5.1.

To correct the issue, you must update the software on the ReplayTV.  To update the software on the ReplayTV, you must interrupt the connection by restarting the ReplayTV.  Then perform a network connection to download the software.

You may need to perform the steps below three or four times.  It is recommended that you write down your configuration settings and change inputs to nothing to reduce connection time.  Additionally, you may need to lower the connection speed on the modem to make the connection more stable.

Remember this only affects 5xxx units that are running version, see STEP 2 to identify software version.

1) RESTART THE REPLAYTV

Hold down the power button on the ReplayTV until you hear the fan turn off.  This normally takes about 15 seconds. Release the button and let the ReplayTV start up. The ReplayTV may turn back off when it's finished starting up.

2) CHECK SOFTWARE VERSION OF THE REPLAYTV

    • Press MENU on the remote
    • Select SETUP
    • Select SYSTEM INFORMATION

The current version is 530511440, that Is 5.1 build 144.  Any software version that begins with the number 53050 or a lower is old software and needs to be updated.

3) WRITE DOWN SETTINGS AND ASSIGN INPUTS TO NOTHING

This step is OPTIONAL, but certainly can reduce the time that it takes to complete the update.  By assigning the inputs as NOTHING, Channel Guide data will not be transferred.  It is recommended that you review all of your settings, especially if you are using a cable box or satellite receiver with an IR Blaster.

    • Press MENU on the remote
    • Select SETUP
    • Select NETWORK AND INPUT SETTINGS
    • Hightlight CHANGE IN 1
    • Write down settings
    • Select CHANGE IN 1
    • Select NOTHING
    • Hightlight CHANGE IN 2
    • Write down settings
    • Select CHANGE IN 2
    • Select NOTHING
    • Hightlight CHANGE ANT / CATV
    • Write down settings
    • Select CHANGE ANT / CATV
    • Select NOTHING
    • Select KEEP ALL SETTINGS

The ReplayTV should automatically connect to the ReplayTV Service, if not proceed to the next step.

4) FORCE A NETWORK CONNECTION

    • Exit any menus
    • Press 2 4 3 and the ZONES button
    • Select NET CONNECT

The ReplayTV should now connect to the ReplayTV Service, if it does not then restart the ReplayTV.  Hold down the power button on the ReplayTV until you hear the fan turn off.  This normally takes about 15 seconds. Release the button and let the ReplayTV start up. The ReplayTV may turn back off when it's finished starting up.

5) RESTART THE REPLAYTV WHEN IT STALLS

If the ReplayTV doesn't start downloading 5.1, it will stall at CHECKING FOR NEW SOFTWARE or TRANSFERRING ADDITIONAL INFORMATION.  Wait for 15 seconds, and then restart the ReplayTV.   If 5.1 does start to download, you will see GETTING NEW SOFTWARE 1% onscreen.

6) REPEAT PROCESS AS NECESSARY

Repeat steps 3 and 4. It normally takes 2 - 3 attempts to get 5.1 to download.

Sometimes this process can take several attempts to complete.  If the download is interrupted it may be necessary to lower the connection speed of the modem, follow the directions below.

LOWERING CONNECTION SPEED

It's possible that lowering the connection speed could make the connections a little longer. Start off lowering to 33.6 kbps, then to 26.4 kbps or 19.2 kbps, etc as necessary.

    • Press MENU on the ReplayTV remote
    • Select SETUP
    • Select NETWORK AND INPUT SETTINGS
    • Select CHANGE TELEPHONE
    • Verify your phone number is correct and continue
    • Continue until you reach the DIALING PREFIX screen
    • Press the ZONES button on your remote
    • Scroll down to MAX CONNECT SPEED
    • Use the left or right arrow to change the speed from DEFAULT to 33.6 or lower
    • Choose DONE
    • Continue until you reach the SETUP SUMMARY screen
    • Choose KEEP ALL SETTINGS

Refer back to STEP 4 - FORCE A NETWORK CONNECTION to continue.
