Local Video Sharing can only be performed between two or more ReplayTV models of the same series. If you have a 40xx model or a 45xx model, then you can stream to a and a 40xx model or a 45xx model. If you have a 50xx model or a 55xx model, then you can stream to a and a 50xx model or a 55xx model. You cannot share between a 4xxx and a 5xxx model. You may be able to see the different unit in the other units list from the ReplayTV Guide; however, you will NOT be able to see a list of shows or be able to stream shows to the local unit.
Provided that you have two compatible models, Local Video Sharing trouble usually falls into two categories. Either you are not able to see the the ReplayTV or you are not able to stream to the other ReplayTV. Regardless troubleshooting for each of these issues is very similar, so there be one set of instructions.
DESCRIPTION OF PROBLEM:
There are several things that can cause a ReplayTV to not see each other on the network. One of the most common is the fact that the clocks of the ReplayTVs can be out of synch, causing this to occur. Forcing a network connection will typically resolve this issue.
The more complex a network becomes, the more hops or points data must travel to reach its destination. Reducing the number of hops can provide the desired results.
Additionally certain types of networking hardware may not support Universal Plug And Play [UPNP], which is required by the ReplayTV. This can be more common with wireless hardware, especially if both units will Net Connect just fine.
SYMPTOM 1 - UNITS NOT SEEING EACH OTHER
ReplayTV units are not able to see each other, because of that they are not able to local video share. Another symptom might be that the ReplayTV 1 can see ReplayTV 2, but the ReplayTV 2 cannot see ReplayTV 1.
SYMPTOM 2 - UNITS NOT BEING ABLE TO STREAM TO EACH OTHER
ReplayTV units are able to see each other, that is they are listed in the ReplayTV guides as THIS REPLAYTV and the name of the OTHER ReplayTV, but you are not able to see the list of shows.
ReplayTV units are able to see each other, that is they are listed in the ReplayTV guides as THIS REPLAYTV and the name of the OTHER ReplayTV, but you are not able to stream shows back and forth.
ReplayTV units are able to see each other, that is they are listed in the ReplayTV guides as THIS REPLAYTV and the name of the OTHER ReplayTV, but THIS REPLAYTV reboots when streaming begins.
ReplayTV units are able to see each other, that is they are listed in the ReplayTV guides as THIS REPLAYTV and the name of the OTHER ReplayTV, but THIS REPLAYTV receives an error stating that the "other" ReplayTV is not available when streaming begins.
Remember you cannot mix and match 4xxx and 5xxx models.

RESOLUTION - DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS:
Step 1 - Perform 243 Zones - FIND OTHER REPLAYTVS [5xxx models ONLY]
Return to LIVE TV, then press 2 4 3 ZONES on the remote, select option 17, which is FIND OTHER REPLAYTVS. This should look for other ReplayTVs that are on the network.
Step 2 - Perform NET CONNECT on ReplayTVs
Connect to the ReplayTV service, this will adjust the clocks on the units and should assist if the clocks on the units were not synchorized.
- Press MENU
- Press SETUP
- Press CONNECT TO REPLAYTV SERVICE NOW
Step 3 - Check the Network Settings to ensure the ReplayTVs are on the same network
Check the network settings of the ReplayTVs. If they are not on the same network, they will not communicate. The IP ADDRESS of both devices should be the same first 3 groups of digits (example: 192.168.0.x - where x is not in use by another networking device). The SUBNET MASK and GATEWAY should also be the same value.
Checking ReplayTV's network settings:
- Press MENU on the remote
- Select SETUP
- Select SYSTEM INFORMATION
- Select ETHERNET
Example: ReplayTV 1
IP ADDRESS 192.168.0.103
NETMASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
Example: ReplayTV 2
IP ADDRESS 192.168.0.104
NETMASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
If the two ReplayTVs are not on the same network then they will not be able to local video share. Release and renew one ReplayTV at a time to see which ReplayTV will change it's network settings. If they remain the same then they are physically connected to different networks. In that case, have the customer bring them onto the same network.
RELEASE AND RENEW NETWORK SETTINGS
Occasionally network settings can be lost and just need to be refreshed. This can occur if you are using a DHCP network, follow the directions below to refresh the network settings.
- Press MENU on the remote
- Select SETUP
- Select NETWORK AND INPUT SETTINGS
- Select CHANGE NETWORK
- Select RELEASE / RENEW or CHANGE FROM MANUAL TO AUTOMATED
- Once completed, select KEEP ALL SETTINGS
Step 4 - Change Name of ReplayTV(s)
Changing the name of the ReplayTV on the network, should announce to the other ReplayTVs that there is a new ReplayTV on the network basically refreshing the list of available units.
CHANGING NAME OF REPLAYTV
- Press MENU on the remote
- Select SETUP
- Select REPLAYTV NAME
- Select a name from the list or define a CUSTOM NAME
- Select DONE when finished
Step 5 - Hard Boot ReplayTVs
If any of the ReplayTVs are recording, stop the recording and unplug the ReplayTVs from AC power. Leave them disconnected for about 15 seconds. Then reconnect them.
Step 6 - Check that Universal Plug And Play [UPNP] is enable on router.
Check to see if there is an option for Universal Plug And Play on your router. Since the ReplayTV uses UPNP packets, this needs to be enabled on the router in order to function.
Example: Linksys BEFW1S4v4 Firmware 1.50.14
On this router it is located on the ADMINISTRATION page, the option is labeled UPnP, the values are ENABLED or DISABLED.
Step 7 - Manually Assign Network Settings
MANUALLY ASSIGNING NETWORK SETTINGS ON THE REPLAYTV
Changing the network settings on the ReplayTV can provide more consistent connections because of issues arising from the usage of other network devices.
To change the settings on the ReplayTV you will first need to know if the IP Address that you are thinking of using is available or if it is in use. The second step is to change the settings on the ReplayTV and test the connection. It will be helpful to understand what some of the settings.
- The IP ADDRESS is the address or location of the computer on the network [example: 192.168.0.50].
- The GATEWAY is the network’s gate to the internet; it is the method that networking devices use to get to the World Wide Web, it also happens to be the router’s internal IP Address [example: 192.168.0.1].
- The NETMASK or SUBNET MASK is a filter to divide the network into smaller networks [example: 255.255.255.0]
- DNS1 and DNS2 are the Domain Name System or [DNS] which is a service that matches a domain with the numeric address. This system is an address book and will tell devices where to look for places on the internet.
For example www.google.com is also 64.233.167.99. You can enter that address into your web browser and be directed to that website. Notice that the DNS setting is also the IP Address of the Gateway, this is so that if the settings change the router can take care of it.
In this case we want to use only DNS1, so if DNS2 has data, we will want to delete it as it can cause the ReplayTV to hang as it searches for the ReplayTV Service [example: DNS1 = 192.168.0.1; DNS2 = blank or empty].
CHECKING NETWORK SETTINGS
- For a Windows 2000 or XP computer, Click START
- Click START
- Click RUN
- Type CMD or COMMAND
- Press ENTER on the keyboard
- A DOS style window will launch, at the prompt type IPCONFIG
- Press ENTER on the keyboard
- Record IP ADDRESS, SUBNET MASK and GATEWAY or DEFAULT GATEWAY.
Example: PC Settings
IP ADDRESS 192.168.0.101
SUBNET MASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1
DNS 192.168.0.1
The computer is using the above IP Address; this is a typical address for a DHCP server to give out to a networking device. The “pool” typically begins at 100 and is 50 addresses in size. This means that the router will start passing addresses out at 100 and stop at 49, when the pool is full. The IP Address range would be 192.168.0.100 through 192.168.0.49
Because we want to avoid any complications with IP Addresses, we want to use an address outside of the DHCP pool. We can typically use Addresses 2 through 254. Let us try using the IP Address 50. Our first IP Address to test would be 192.168.0.50, if it is being used, we will try 192.168.0.60.
TESTING AN IP ADDRESS
- Using the same DOS Style window, type PING 192.168.0.50
- If the results give a REPLY FROM 192.168.0.50 with 0% loss, then the computer is communicating with a device on that IP Address and the address is in use. We will want to select another IP Address.
- If the results give a REQUEST TIMED OUT with 100% loss, then the computer is not communicating with a device on that IP Address and the address is available for use. We will want to use this IP Address.
MANUALLY ASSIGNING NETWORK SETTINGS ON THE REPLAYTV
- Press MENU on the remote
- Select SETUP
- Select NETWORK AND INPUT SETTINGS
- Select CHANGE NETWORK
- Select CHANGE FROM AUTOMATED TO MANUAL or CHANGE MANUAL SETTINGS
- Enter the following information, based on the PC settings above.
IP ADDRESS 192.168.0.50
NETMASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
- Select CONTINUE
- Select KEEP ALL SETTINGS
- You have now configured your network settings manually.
- Repeat the procedure for your second ReplayTV using the settings below.
IP ADDRESS 192.168.0.51
NETMASK 255.255.255.0
GATEWAY 192.168.0.1
DNS1 192.168.0.1
Step 8 - Simplify Network Connections
If you are still unable to resolve the issue, then connect both ReplayTV's directly to the same router or switch. This will limit the hops to 2 and should resolve the issue. If simplifying the connection does not resolve the issue with Local Video Sharing, try Net Connecting again. If not look to cabling or hardware failure of the router, switch or ReplayTV(s).
